Argüelles & Moncloa

Argüelles & Moncloa refer to two adjacent areas in northwestern central Madrid that combine residential neighbourhoods, major green spaces and key transport hubs. Located west of Gran Vía and north of Plaza de España, this area marks the transition from the historic city centre to larger open spaces and university districts. Its importance lies in its strategic position, linking central Madrid with Casa de Campo and the city’s northwestern corridors.

Argüelles developed mainly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a middle- and upper-class residential area, characterised by wide streets, apartment buildings and proximity to major institutions. Moncloa, slightly further northwest, is best known as a transport and university zone, close to the Complutense University, the Parque del Oeste and several monumental complexes. Together, they form a mixed urban landscape where residential life, education and green spaces intersect.

Argüelles & Moncloa also function as a gateway to Madrid’s western green areas. From here, visitors can easily reach Parque del Oeste, Templo de Debod, Casa de Campo and viewpoints over the Royal Palace and the Manzanares valley. The area connects central landmarks such as Plaza de España and Royal Palace with more open, less dense parts of the city, making it a key transition zone in Madrid’s urban structure.
