Retiro & Literary Quarter (Barrio de las Letras) refer to two closely connected areas in central Madrid that together combine green space, culture and historic urban life. Located south and east of Puerta del Sol and alongside the Paseo del Prado, this area brings together Retiro Park, one of the city’s main green lungs, and the historic streets traditionally associated with Spain’s Golden Age writers. Their importance lies in how they balance nature, culture and everyday city life within a compact and walkable setting.

The Literary Quarter developed in the 16th and 17th centuries as the neighbourhood where figures such as Cervantes, Lope de Vega and Quevedo lived and worked, leaving behind a dense fabric of narrow streets, historic houses and small squares. Adjacent to it, Retiro Park was originally a royal retreat before becoming a public park, shaping the area’s identity as a place of leisure and reflection. Together, they form a cultural landscape reinforced by nearby institutions such as the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía Museum and the Royal Botanical Garden, all part of the UNESCO-listed Landscape of Light.

Retiro & Literary Quarter also act as a transition zone between major parts of the city.
