Paseo del Prado

Paseo del Prado is a historic, tree-lined boulevard located in central Madrid, running between Plaza de Cibeles and Plaza del Emperador Carlos V (Atocha). More than a traffic artery, it is one of the city’s most important urban spaces, designed as a place for walking, culture and public life. Its relevance lies in the concentration of major institutions and green spaces that make it a defining axis of Madrid’s historic and cultural landscape.

The distinctive character of the Paseo del Prado comes from its role as the core of the Landscape of Light (Paisaje de la Luz), a UNESCO World Heritage site. Along this relatively short stretch stand three of Madrid’s most important museums — the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía Museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum — alongside historic fountains such as Cibeles, Neptune and Apollo, and the formal gardens of the Real Jardín Botánico. Conceived in the 18th century as an enlightened urban promenade, the boulevard reflects an early vision of the city as a space for science, culture and leisure.

The Paseo del Prado also acts as a connector between key districts and landmarks. It links Retiro Park with the historic centre, borders the Literary Quarter (Barrio de las Letras), and leads naturally towards Atocha Station and Madrid Río beyond. For visitors, it is a reference point that brings together museums, monuments and green spaces along a single, easily walkable route.
