Plaza Canalejas

Plaza de Canalejas is a small but strategically important urban space located between Puerta del Sol and Carrera de San Jerónimo, in the very heart of Madrid. Rather than functioning as a traditional square, it acts as a node connecting historic streets, financial buildings, and recent high-end developments, making it a key reference point in the city centre’s urban fabric.

Its defining feature is the architectural ensemble that frames the square, formed by late 19th- and early 20th-century buildings originally linked to banking and insurance institutions. Among them stands the Casa de Allende, an elegant example of historicist architecture that reflects the area’s former role as Madrid’s financial core. These buildings give Plaza de Canalejas a formal, institutional character that contrasts with the commercial intensity of nearby Sol.

In recent years, the square has been reshaped by the opening of Galería Canalejas, a luxury shopping and dining complex integrated into several restored historic buildings. This development has repositioned Plaza de Canalejas as a bridge between historic Madrid and contemporary premium retail, linking Sol, the Congreso de los Diputados area, and the axis leading towards the Prado and the Paseo del Arte.
