Plaza de la Villa

Plaza de la Villa is a small historic square located in the Austrias & Plaza Mayor area, just a few steps north of Plaza Mayor and close to the Royal Palace. It is one of the oldest civic spaces in Madrid and marks the heart of the city’s medieval core, where municipal power and urban life were concentrated long before Madrid became the capital of Spain.

What sets Plaza de la Villa apart is its exceptional architectural continuity. The square is framed by three key buildings from different periods: the Casa de la Villa (17th century), which served as Madrid’s City Hall for centuries; the Casa de Cisneros, a Renaissance palace later integrated into the complex; and the Torre y Casa de los Lujanes, one of the best-preserved medieval civil buildings in the city. Together, they offer a rare, compact overview of Madrid’s civic architecture across time.

Plaza de la Villa sits naturally between major landmarks such as Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and the Royal Palace, making it a quiet historical counterpoint to Madrid’s more crowded central squares. It is often encountered while walking between the Austrias quarter and the Sol & Gran Vía area, reinforcing its role as a connective piece within historic Madrid.
