Callao Square

Callao Square (Plaza del Callao) is a central urban square located in the very heart of Madrid, where Gran Vía, Calle Preciados and several secondary streets converge. More than a traditional plaza, Callao functions as a strategic city node, marking the transition between Madrid’s historic core and its main commercial and entertainment axis. Its importance lies less in its size or monuments and more in its role as a highly visible, constantly active point of reference within the city.

What makes Callao distinctive is its long-standing association with cinema, advertising and modern urban culture. Since the early 20th century, the square has been defined by landmark cinema buildings and large-format façades, most notably the Edificio Carrión (Capitol Building), whose curved profile has become one of Madrid’s most recognizable silhouettes. For visitors, it is often encountered not as a destination in itself, but as a constant reference point along key walking routes through the city center.
