Edificio Carrión

The Edificio Carrión, also known as the Capitol Building, is one of the most iconic buildings of Gran Vía, located at the junction of Gran Vía and Calle de Jacometrezo (close to Callao Square), marking the western stretch of Madrid’s main avenue. Completed in the early 1930s, it occupies a highly visible corner plot and has become one of the most recognisable silhouettes along Gran Vía.

Designed in a rationalist and Art Deco style, the building is best known for its curved façade and its iconic rooftop neon sign, which has long symbolised modern Madrid. The Edificio Carrión reflects the transformation of Gran Vía into a modern urban boulevard during the 20th century.

Originally conceived as a mixed-use building with cinema, hotel, and commercial spaces, with the Capitol cinema as one of its central elements. Over time, these uses have evolved, but the building has retained its multifunctional character. Today, the Edificio Carrión continues to house hotel accommodation, commercial spaces, and offices, maintaining its role as an active part of Gran Vía’s urban and economic life rather than a static architectural monument.
